Learn about our local courses
Our part of Cornwall is beautiful in the Summer, but there are some lovely days in Spring and Autumn too. Outside of school holidays we offer discounts for reduced occupancy at Appleby, and there are some great activities and courses if you’re looking for things to do whilst you’re away. For each course you book direct with the course provider, but we're happy to make introductions to our friends. Here are some ideas:
Cookery Courses
Paul Ainsworth & John Walton's new cookery school, Mahé, is a short ferry ride away in Padstow. We have had a great time there cooking with Paul’s head chef Chris McClurg, who is a great chef and a natural comedian. There were only three of us in our class (the normal class size is up to 5) and we had a great lunch there too. The courses are suitable for all levels of experience and offer hands-on tuition cooking with fresh local produce. There's some hi-tech bits too, including a video feed from the Michelin starred restaurant below and first-rate customer service from the team. More details can be found on Paul Ainsworth's website.
Another option worth considering is Rick Stein’s cookery school (also in Padstow). Rick and his team offer plenty of seafood courses, in addition to one and two day courses specialising in lots of different cuisines, including Indian, French, Mexican and Indonesian.

Learn to Fish
There are many stunning fishing spots around North Cornwall. Cornwall Fishing Adventures can arrange to meet you on the coast, which is just a short walk from Appleby's front door. They offer a range of shore fishing courses, including family fishing adventures, private individual bookings, and the option to join a group of up to six people.

Guided Photography Walks
Photographer Kate Whis does guided photography walks on both sides of the Camel Estuary. She gives tips for both camera and phone photography and the stunning scenery surrounding Appleby is the perfect setting for improving your skills.

Watersports
There's a full range of water sports lessons available at Wavehunters, which is just down the hill in Polzeath. They've been teaching surfing since 2002, from beginners to advanced surfers. Guests at Appleby get a discount on all of their courses.
Thrill seekers can sign up for a powerboat course on the Estuary from Rock with Camel Sailing. They also offer water ski and sailing lessons, too.
